Questions

How much federal income tax is withheld on $80,000?

For a single worker, $80,000 a year gives $8,770.00 in federal income tax withholding in 2026. This is $337.31 every two weeks. The federal tax and FICA on your next dollar is 29.65%.

What are the 2026 withholding brackets?

The IRS schedule for single or married filing separately is: 0% up to $7,500; 10% from $7,500 to $19,900; 12% from $19,900 to $57,900; 22% from $57,900 to $113,200; 24% from $113,200 to $209,275; 32% from $209,275 to $263,725; 35% from $263,725 to $648,100; 37% over $648,100. The amounts are your yearly pay after the $8,600 of the IRS worksheet and your 401(k).

How does the IRS figure the withholding?

It follows Worksheet 1A of Publication 15-T. Take your yearly pay and subtract your 401(k). Subtract $8,600, or $12,900 if you are married filing jointly. Find the row of the schedule, add its base amount, and add its rate times the pay over the start of the row. Divide by the number of paychecks.

Is the withholding the tax I owe?

No. The withholding is an advance on your tax. For a full year at one job, it matches the tax of the year with the standard deduction. Your tax return sets the tax you owe, and it can be different because of credits, other income and deductions.

What is the difference between the marginal and the average rate?

The average rate is your tax divided by your pay. The marginal rate is the tax on your next dollar. The marginal rate is usually higher, because each bracket has a higher rate.
