Texas has no state income tax on wages.

Each paycheck is the yearly amount divided by the number of paychecks, in cents. If your pay is over the Social Security limit of $184,500.00, your real paychecks have no Social Security tax late in the year. The average rate is your taxes divided by your pay. The marginal rate is the same taxes on your next dollar. This is an estimate for 2026.

Questions

How much is $60,000 a year after tax in the US?

For a single worker paid every two weeks, $60,000 a year gives $50,390.00 after tax in 2026, or $1,938.07 a paycheck. Federal income tax is $5,020.00, Social Security is $3,720.00 and Medicare is $870.00. This holds in a state with no tax on wages. Other states add their own tax.

How does the calculator work?

Type your pay. Choose if it is for a year, a month, twice a month, every two weeks, a week or an hour. Choose your filing status, how often you are paid and your 401(k) share. The page shows federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and your take-home pay for a year and for each paycheck.

Which states does it cover?

It adds the state tax and the state payroll taxes for California, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. It adds nothing for the nine states with no tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. For any other state, it shows federal tax and FICA only, and it says that the state tax is not in the calculator yet. It does not include local taxes.

Does my 401(k) lower my Social Security and Medicare tax?

No. A traditional 401(k) lowers the wages for federal income tax. Social Security and Medicare tax are still on your full pay. The calculator stops the 401(k) at the $24,500 limit of 2026 and leaves out the catch-up amount for people aged 50 and over.

Is the result exact?

No. It is an estimate for one job, a full year, and a Form W-4 of 2020 or later with nothing in Steps 2, 3 and 4. Your paycheck can be different because of other pre-tax benefits, local taxes, a second job, and the choices on your W-4. The tax you owe is set when you file your tax return.
